Happy Birthday Joan Jett!

Joan Marie Larkin was born on September 22nd, 1958 in Philadelphia, PA

Jett entered the music business at the age of 15 with band The Runaways, comprising of Jett on guitar and vocals, Sandy West (Drums), Cherie Currie (Lead Vocals), Jackie Fox(Bass), Lita Ford (Guitar)

In 1976 The Runaways released their debut, self-titled album. The next year they released their second album, Queen of Noise, which became a hit in Japan. After 3 more album releases the Runaways disbanded in 1979

Jett began pursuing a solo career in the wake of the Runaways breakup with producer Kenny Laguna and songwriter Ritchie Cordell and released her first solo album Joan Jett in 1980. With Laguna’s assistance, Joan Jett formed the Blackhearts with bassist Gary Ryan, guitarist Eric Ambel, and drummer Danny “Furious” O’Brien. Their debut album I Love Rock and Roll was released in 1981 and became an instant hit with its single of the same name. The band released their second album called Album in 1983 and then Glorious Results of a Misspent Youth in 1984

Joan took a shot at acting she had a role in Light of Day with Michael J. Fox in 1987. She also recorded the theme song to the movie. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts released Up Your Alley in 1988 with hits like “I Hate Myself for Loving You” and “Little Liar” appearing on the record

Jett released The Hit List, a collection of cover songs, in 1990. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts released Notorious in 1991 “Our music is still pure and simple basic rock” Jett said, as the band released their album “Pure and Simple” in 1994.

Jett continued producing for bands like Bikini Kill and L7 during the early to mid-90s. Jett took a break from the studio and in 2004, the her and the Blackhearts released Naked in Japan. In 2006 Sinner was released as the band’s 9th U.S. album. In 2008, Gibson released a Joan Jett Signature Melody Maker guitar; it was the first Gibson electric signature mode designed with a female artist in mind. In 2009 Jett served as an executive producer on the film The Runaways, helping Kristen Stewart in her portrayal as a young Jett; the movie was released in 2010


*Joan Jett and The Blackhearts were nominees to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012, but the band wasn’t selected

*Jett and the Blackhearts will release Unvarnished, their first studio album in seven years, on October 1, 2013; Dave Grohl will guest on the album

*Jett and her family moved to Rockville, MA, in 1967, and later, they relocated to West Covina, CA

*Joan received her first guitar at the age of 13

*She has become a feminist icon throughout her long career

*Jett has been a vegetarian for over 20 years and has worked closely with organizations such as PETA and Farm Sanctuary
