Children's Arthritis Walks
Not everyone is aware, but children get arthritis too. The Arthritis Foundation, Michigan Chapter, is proud host the 2008 Birmingham and Grosse Pointe Arthritis Walks in honor of the 10,300 children and 2.4 million adults living with arthritis in Michigan. This family-friendly event offers snacks, clowns, magicians, a light lunch, a bouncy house, and both one- and three-mile walk routes. Register to walk for free and join us, Saturday, May 3, in Grosse Pointe at Richard Elementary School at 9:00 AM, and Saturday, May 10 in Birmingham, at Midvale Community Center at 9:00 AM. Classic Legends Car Show
This year the Classic Legends will be hosting their 18th annual Memorial Day Charity Car show on Memorial Day, May 26. The Annual event will be held at Brighton High School ,7878 Brighton Rd., in Brighton, rain or shine. The event is open to all makes and models of classic or newer cars and trucks. The show opens at 7:00 am and ends around 4:00pm. Over 26 trophy classes with multiple awards will be awarded. There will be live entertainment, food, door prizes and a silent auction. Funds raised will benefit local charities in southeastern Michigan. The show averages over 500 cars and attracts over 1500 spectators each year. Komen Detroit Race for the Cure
REGION-WIDE EFFORT TO HELP SAVE LIVES AND END BREAST CANCER FOREVER The 17th Annual Susan G. Komen Detroit Race for the Cure, locally presented by the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute - 5K Run/Walk and One-Mile Walk, with a projected 30,000 participants. Join us as we carry on the promise to end breast cancer forever. Michigan's largest footrace, the Susan G. Komen Detroit Race for the Cure®, will be held Saturday, May 31, at Comerica Park, in Detroit. There will be a 5K competitive race, a 5K walk and a one-mile walk, offering something for every fitness level. Komen Detroit Race for the Cure is a unique blend of purpose and entertainment, of beloved traditions and cool surprises. Ten thousand pink ribbons will decorate the Woodward Avenue route from Warren to Comerica Park. Performers will inspire racers and walkers along the walk and at Opening and At the closing ceremonies, this family-friendly event features 20 bands and performers, a Children's Area, a Survivor Café, Shop for the Cure® and sponsor booth with giveaways. Macomb County Crisis Center
The Macomb County Crisis Center has its telephone counseling lines open seven days a week, 24-hours a day to help people with any problem. Their number is 586-307-9100. A telecommunication device for the deaf is available.


Michigan Asthma Walk
The American Lung Association of Michigan Asthma Walk will be held on Saturday, May 17 at 9:00a.m. at the Detroit International Riverfront. Registration will begin at 7:30a.m. The Asthma Walk will raise funds for lung health education, advocacy, asthma treatments and research. 1 of every 9 Michiganders lives with asthma, and asthma is responsible for more school absences than any other chronic disease. Registration is free for everyone. All participants who raise the suggested minimum of $100 will receive an official Asthma Walk T-shirt. Michigan Disability Rights Coalition
The Michigan Disability Rights Coalition has created ATXchange.org! Assertaive Technology exchange. Nearly two million Michigan residents have disabilities. Many require tools or equipment which are often expensive and sometimes hard to find to perform day to day activities. At the Michigan-based website, people can buy, sell, or give away assistive technology—everything from walkers, grab bars, and hospital beds, to power scooters, custom vans, Braille machines, and software that reads computer screens out loud. You can help connect people who need assistive technology with those who have used AT items they no longer want —free of charge, or at bargain prices. ATXchange.org is also useful for people who’ve lost a loved one and would like to donate or sell items—such as wheelchairs or power scooters—that are no longer needed.

Motorcycle Awareness Month
May is Motorcycle Awareness month in Michigan. ABATE of Michigan reminds car drivers to be Aware of motorcycles while driving. When driving, remember to “Look Twice & Save A Life.” Be aware of the motorcycles riding the roads around you so everyone arrives at their destination safely. ABATE of Michigan = American Bikers Aiming Toward Education. Each region of ABATE of Michigan sponsors its own Motorcycle Awareness Program. These programs use volunteer members to go into local driver education classes and present a 45-minute program on how to be more aware of motorcycles while driving:

Oakland County Resource and Crisis Helpline is immediately available for people who need crisis intervention, referrals and resource information to assist adults and children with mental illness, behavioral problems, Cerebral Palsy or mental retardation. Special Olympics Summer Games
Special Olympics athletes from across Michigan to compete in the 23rd State Summer Games. The 2008 State Summer Games will be held Thursday, May 29th through Saturday, May 31 on the Campus of Central Michigan University. Nearly 3,000 athletes will compete in 10 different sports from swimming to gymnastics to track & field. Come out and cheer on these amazing athletes as they go for the gold. Stamp Out Hunger
On Saturday, May 10, Metro Detroit Area letter carriers will again help Stamp Out Hunger! across America with your help. Now in its 16th year, the Stamp Out Hunger! effort is the nation's largest single-day food drive, with letter carriers having collected more than 836 million pounds of food from postal customers since its inception. Donations are then delivered to community food banks, pantries and shelters. To help Stamp Out Hunger, simply leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta, rice or cereal next to your mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on May 10. Food items should be in non-breakable containers, such as boxes and cans. Local letter carriers will then collect donations from homes across the city and deliver them to local area Food Banks.


TAKE STEPS for Crohn’s and Colitis WALK
One-point-five million Americans have Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis and are waiting for a cure. You can help make a difference! The Michigan Chapter of Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America invites you to join in the annual TAKE STEPS for Crohn’s and Colitis WALK on SATURDAY, MAY 17, at Camp Dearborn in Milford. The proceeds of this Walk will help support research into the cause and cure of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, as well as provide programs and services to patients.
