"BIG MIRACLE" - WHY YOU SHOULD SEE IT
What an interesting week in movies, had the chance to screen two new movies this week - "Chronicle" and "Big Miracle". And talks about the two ends of the spectrum when it comes to the movie going experience! Let me get my review of "Chronicle" out of the way...it was brutally bad, no flow to it, basically "Blair Witch Emo Superheroes" or "Emo X-Men". No payoff for the moviegoer, no message other than weak people cant handle any power at all, and it featured every stereotype in the book. My grade? F Now I turn to "Big Miracle" -- it's based on a true story about three whales trapped under the ice in Alaska in 1988 and the incredible (but true) efforts to rescue these animals. "Big Miracle" features Drew Barrymore, Kristen Bell and John Krasinski ("The Office"). He's a TV reporter who's in a small town that uncovers the story, and Drew's his ex-girlfriend who works with Greenpeace -- trying to save the whales. Anything I write about this movie will be selling it short, this is a movie that deserves to been seen....and that scares me.  Why does it scare me? Because the movie going audience has a ...

JUSTIFIED IS BACK!
Okay, I'm not a huge "gotta watch this" TV slappy...but "Justified" is different. Not only does it have a huge Detroit connection (based on a character from Elmore Leonard) -- but the writing, acting and action is unlike anything on today. Season three kicks off tonight (Tuesday) at 10pm -- and I had the chance to talk with Natalie Zea, she plays Winona (Raylan Givens ex-wife). Great conversation with a very cool lady -- gives some wonderful insight into the show, and talk of a possible spin-off? click here for the podcast or listen below

THE RETURN OF STONE SOUP
Hi, For those of you don't know me, my name is Jim O'Brien - and I've been at WCSX for over 9 years. One of the things I'm most proud of is the Stone Soup Project that I helped create when I got here. The idea was simple - lets build a car for the "Big Cruise" in August...totally from donations with no expertise and no money. At first it was just something silly...but quickly we came to realize (with the help of donations from folks like Ricaro and Roush Racing) that we were on to something. The Stone Soup Mustang was the first car, I honestly don't remember how much money we made in ticket sales. But I remember the sense of accomplishment and pride in all the people who helped make it happen. Over the years we raised in excess of $1 million dollars for charities here in Detroit.  So why is it back after a 3 year hiatus? It's time. With all the talk of muscle cars (new Mustangs, Camaros, Chargers, Challengers, etc.) and the even more pressing need to support local charities...it's time. The Children's Miracle Network at Beaumont Hospital will be the charity this year ...

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES - NEW TRAILER
Okay, I'll admit I rolled my eyes when Christopher Nolan reset the Batman franchise a couple of years ago...and boy, was I wrong. The past two "Batman" movies with Christian Bale have been amazing...it's a shame this is the last one. Check out the new trailer (and look for Hines Ward from the Steelers)

RAZR - I'M SORRY
To the fine folks at Motorola: I apologize for all my past comments and blogs about your previous Droid phones…the new Razr is one of the best phones I’ve tried in years (including the iPhone 4S) and makes up for the past products.  First off, it’s the coolest looking phone on the market today, and it weighs less than my keys. The dual core processing and 4G network worked better than any Droid phone I’ve used in the past year (social apps, browser, email, etc. without any lag). It’s nice to see that Motorola has worked on built in apps for the phone…I really enjoyed the “smart actions” and “moto active”. The Razr is built to use as a primary phone/business email platform – and also as a social/task driven planner. Nice camera and video (8 meg auto-focus / front facing camera – and 720 HD video) – and the call quality is tremendous. But I keep coming back to the same thing…over and over and over. It’s a table top phone. Do you know what that means? It’s the kind of phone you set on the table at lunch…at the office…everywhere. This phone is just pretty – the Kevlar ...

THE VIPER IS BACK
Great to see the Dodge Viper SRT coming back (it'll just be the SRT -- but still awesome). They'll start building it again at the Conner Ave. Plant in Detroit -- 150 jobs come back, and one awesome car. The original Viper was a laugh out loud car...you got a smile on your face and laughed when driving around in it. An insane amount of power to the rear wheels -- and the new one is right around 600hp (we'll see the final design in April).  It's nice to see the car makers building what Ralph Gilles of Chrysler SRT's brand is calling "Halo" cars -- exclusive performance level cars - the kind of cars that kids (and adults) have pictures of in their rooms or garage. We're talking ZR1's for Chevy, the Ford GT and now the SRT Viper. I'll be watching in April, and can't wait to see the finished product...i'm sure it'll bring a smile.

UFC 140 - BREAKING ARMS
The UFC is “blowing up” as the kids say. I’ve been a fan of the sport for years (Pride, Strikeforce and the early days of the UFC with Royce Gracie, Kimo and Ken Shamrock). Now admittedly, it’s not for everyone – and I have friends who love boxing but can’t stand watching Mixed Martial Arts. Saturday night was one of the most intense nights of fighting I’ve seen on a PPV card in years – and it was awesome and awful at the same time. I love watching twitter during sporting events, and when Frank Mir broke Minotauro Nogueria’s arm in the first round…twitter went crazy. You had two camps – the UFC fans who couldn’t believe he didn’t tap, and the casual fans who were disgusted by it. Admittedly, I jumped off the couch and yelled --- then replayed it a couple of times before putting some smart ass comments on twitter (“guess I’m done eating chicken wings tonight” – “his new nickname is lefty”). So we move on to the main event with Jon Jones and Lyoto Machida – great first round, and then Jones got hold of him and choked him out in the second…again, no tap. ...

FERRARI GRAVEYARD
Oh, if you're a fan of performance cars (like me) -- this one hurts. A group of supercar enthusiasts took a driver on Sunday, one of the cars apparently lost control and hit the median (causing a chain reaction). The damage? 8 Ferarris, 2 Mercedes and a Lambo...about a million dollars in cars totaled. (scroll down for video of aftermath).

IPHONE 4S OR DROID?
Walking around with a Iphone 4s and HTC Droid Thunderbolt makes me feel like the worlds biggest cell phone geek. But it’s been fun having both so I can ummm – what’s it called? Oh yeah, compare and contrast. Here you go – my completely unbiased review of both phones on the Verizon Network…and why you should go one way or the other. The Iphone4s is easy to set up, even easier to use and loaded with apps (but you knew that). The camera takes great pictures and again is easy to share with others via email, facebook, etc. (but you knew that). Sound quality of phone calls is excellent, better than the HTC phone and the early stages of the Icloud makes it interesting – but be patient and learn slowly, it’s an evolving technology with tremendous upside, but can be overwhelming for some just starting out. And what voice activated Siri? Yes, its really “neat”, but I’ll be interested to see how much people use it in six months. So this is a slam dunk, right? Get the Iphone over the Droid. Not so fast. The HTC Thunderbolt (which I own) is a 4G flamethrower, and once you ...

WHO? THE WHO? QUAD-WHAT? GUILTY
Okay, today (Tuesday) is the re-release of the 40th Anniversary of Quadrophenia by The Who. And it's time to admit something -- didn't like it the first time I heard it. There, you happy? I call "Who Blue Cheese" -- remember when you were a kid and didn't like blue cheese dressing? but as I got older, I went from 1000 Island to Blue Cheese. It's that way with Quadrophenia (and The Who in general) -- the more I listen to them these days, the better they sound. I've gone that way with other bands (Cheap Trick, early Pink Floyd) but i'm blown away by their sound. Next time you're listening to CSX (I highly recommend the mobile app...sounds awesome coming out of my droid phone, and the iphone version is just as clean) take the extra time to listen to the detail in the music. Classic Rock is unlike any other music because of the amazing artists...it's cool to be part of it.
