Paul McCartney Surprises NYC High School with Impromptu Q&A and Concert
By: AnnMarie Scaramuzzino

This certainly isn’t like the high school assemblies we remember!

Yesterday (October 9), Sir Paul McCartney showed up at the Frank Sinatra School for the Arts’ in Astoria, Queens, New York for a surprise performance, according to Rolling Stone.

Playing for 400 ecstatic performing arts students in the school’s auditorium, McCartney rocked a set of 13-songs, which included Beatles hits like “Eight Days a Week,” “Lady Madonna,” “Hey Jude” and “Blackbird,” Wings classics such as “Band on the Run” and “Jet,” and two songs from his upcoming record: “Save Us” and the title track, “New.”

Between songs, McCartney answered questions from the students and New York DJ Jim Kerr, at one point quipping, “This beats going to class!”

In response to one girl’s inquiry about the greatest lesson the rocker has learned, he responded, “When we first started out, I was terrified of doing anything wrong on stage. But I learned that people don’t mind. They actually kind of like it!”

Besides the students, staff and alumni, McCartney’s wife Nancy Shevell was also in the audience, supporting her rock star husband on the couple’s two year anniversary. The day also marked what would have been John Lennon’s 73rd birthday.

Meanwhile, Paul McCartney continues to gear up for the release of his latest studio album, New, which is due out on October 15. The singer just posted a special album biography detailing the making of the LP on his official website, which can be read here.
