Elton John Postpones Summer Shows Due to Surgery

Due to a case of appendicitis, Elton John is postponing all upcoming shows on his current European tour, confirms a press release on his website.

After crippling stomach pain forced the 66-year-old rocker from the stage last Friday, a medical team was brought in for exploratory scans and blood tests that revealed a potentially-fatal abscess in his appendix.

“I was a ticking time bomb. I guess I could have died at any time,” John told UK’s The Sun, which says that the singer first attributed the pain to mere food poisoning.

“I feel so lucky and so grateful to be alive. I played nine gigs and the White Tie and Tiara Summer Ball in agony,” the legendary songwriter continued.

Sir Elton is currently undergoing a course of intensive antibiotics that will prepare him for surgery in the UK in the coming weeks.

As per the doctor’s orders, John will not resume touring until he has fully recovered from both the planned surgery and any damage caused by the appendix abscess.

One of his biggest cancellations is this Friday’s Barclaycard British Summer Time Festival at London’s famous Hyde Park, where Elton was to share the evening’s Great Oak Stage with the likes of Elvis Costello and former Kinks frontman Ray Davies.

"Elton is incredibly disappointed to postpone these tour dates,” John’s spokesman told The Sun. “To know that he made such super-human efforts and continued to perform to thousands through his illness only confirms his dedication to his European fans. He is eager to be back on top form and return to play the remaining shows starting in early September 2013."

This September will also see the drop of John’s upcoming album, The Diving Board; click here to see the LP’s video trailer.

The "Rocket Man" singer also recently announced that he will be playing London's iTunes Festival in September.
