Have you ever wondered whether an artist like John Lennon would make it in the music industry today?
So has “Funny or Die” comedy duo Failures, whose video mash-up of John Lennon solo footage with NBC’s singing competition, “The Voice,” proves an eerily realistic and lampooning spoof of what would happen if the former Beatle auditioned for the show.
The video captures a 34-year-old, guitar-yielding Lennon performing his enduring lyrical gem, “Imagine,” on what appears to be “The Voice” stage, and failing to get a single one of the judge’s to spin around.
The show’s lineup of star judges, whose commercial successes are thought to make them experts in the industry, are shown as being unimpressed by the former Beatle’s talents.
Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine give a “thumbs down” sign and the hands of “Hips Don’t Lie” songstress Shakira hover over--but fail to press--the big red button that would turn her chair around to give Lennon the credit that he is due. Country singer Blake Shelton explains that, the song’s verses “seem too dramatic” for him, while a disinterested Usher comforts John by saying this is, “just the beginning” for his career.
The video ends with host Carson Daly introducing a teaser clip of the show’s next, sure-to-be-shot-down contestant: a young Bob Dylan in all of his twangy glory.
Despite their immense popularity, TV singing shows like “The Voice” and “American Idol” have long been criticized for being glorified karaoke contests, as opposed to true measures of an individual’s musicianship and creative talent. Taking this into account, it is hard to imagine many of Rock and Roll history’s greats: including John Lennon, making it in such a competition.
What do you think John Lennon would think of this video? Can you think of any other rock legends that might be deemed unworthy by modern singing competition standards? Please share your thoughts with us in the comments section below!
