If you mix a little soul, a dash of blues, plenty of rock and all that jazz, what do you have? Jeff Beck, of course, and today the iconic guitarist celebrates a birthday!
Beck is such a wonder to the music industry because he brought new elements into his music, and though he couldn’t decide between rock, blues or jazz, that might just be what we love most about him.
Beck got his start as lead guitarist in bands like the Rumbles, Screaming Lord Sutch, the Tridents and the Yardbirds, the last of which was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.
After making a name for himself in the Yardbirds, Beck formed the Jeff Beck Group with singer Ron Stewart and bassist Ron Wood in 1967, releasing two albums, 1968’s Truth and 1969’s Beck-Ola.
However, the band split up and Beck continued to reform the band with various artists, releasing a few albums before pursuing a solo career.
But Beck did more than just pursue. His career as a solo artist has been extremely successful.
He has been featured on several artists’ albums, including Stevie Wonder’s 1973 Talking Book and Mick Jagger’s sophomore album, Primitive Cool, and he has released a number of instrumental albums, earning him five Grammy wins for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
Beck has also toured the world, including a 2003 summer tour with B.B King on the 12th Annual B.B King Musical Festival. He was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist back in 2009.
Beck’s latest studio album, Emotion & Commotion, was released in 2010. He’s expected to feature on Brian Wilson’s 11th studio album, hopefully inspiring him to release another LP and possibly hit the road again soon.
Beck is an influential part of music history, and whether or not he continues to rock on, we want to wish him a rockin’ birthday today!
