As the drummer for one of the most iconic bands ever, Joey Kramer has been the backbeat of Boston rockers, Aerosmith for over four decades.
Born Joseph Michael Kramer in the Bronx in New York on June 21, 1950, Kramer was inspired to pursue music at a young age. In 1970, a then 20-year-old Kramer reconnected with an old friend named Steven Tyler.
Along with Tyler, guitarist Joe Perry and bassist Tom Hamilton were looking for a drummer, so Kramer joined the group with Brad Whitford soon to follow as the band’s second guitarist, and Aerosmith was born.
The group released their self-titled debut album in 1973, which kick-started the band’s success. Following a few tours and two more albums, Aerosmith became one of the most popular live acts of the decade. With sold out shows left and right, people came in droves to see the band play hits like “Sweet Emotion,” “Last Child” and “Walk This Way.”
As the band’s rocket to fame began to take its toll, Aerosmith disbanded for a few years before regrouping in 1984 for their Back in the Saddle Tour. The band released a string of hits that kicked off in the late ‘80s and continued through the ‘90s, including “Crazy,” “Cryin',"Angel" and "I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing."
With Kramer, Aerosmith earned an immense amount of success, which landed them on Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Artists list and scored them an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.
In 2004, Kramer branched out and developed an instructional drumming project called Aerosmith’s Joey Kramer: Drum Loops and Samples, which was a two-disc set of drum tracks for musicians of any skill level to be able to utilize.
Currently, Kramer is on the second leg of Aerosmith's Global Warming tour, in support of the band's 2012 LP Music From Another Dimension.
Because of his contributions to one of the greatest rock bands around, we’re happy to wish Joey Kramer a wonderful birthday!
