Happy Birthday to Steve Winwood!
The rock legend turns 65 today, and has a lot to show for it, including groundbreaking stints in 1960s and ‘70s groups such as Blind Faith, Traffic and the Spencer Davis Group.
But of the many sounds, styles and projects that Winwood has dabbled in over the years, his greatest successes have come as a result of his solo efforts, with his 1986 album Back in the High Life going triple-platinum and winning him two Grammys, including “Best Pop Vocal Performance” and “Record of the Year” for his moving hit-single “Higher Love.”
In 2008, decades after their year-long spell in the 1969 super-group Blind Faith, Winwood and guitar-god Eric Clapton rekindled their artistic alliance to create their Grammy Award-nominated CD and DVD Live At Madison Square Garden, with subsequent tours in the U.S. and Japan in 2009.
A multi-instrumentalist since the unripe age of 8, Winwood is most well-known for his soulful pipes and characteristic Hammond organ, the second of which has adorned such fare as Jimi Hendrix’s time-honored LP Electric Ladyland and country-queen Miranda Lambert’s 2011 hit-single “Baggage Claim”
After all of his accomplishments, it seems as though Winwood has no intentions of slowing down, as he sets 10-country world tour this summer.
