“It's terrible to be thin and wispy because, you know, you could get knocked over by a strong wind or something. Fat is beautiful.”
Those wise words come from the late Doors frontman Jim Morrison in a newly unearthed 1969 interview with Village Voice reporter Howard Smith.
In the interview, Morrison reminisces about enjoying his meal plan and gaining weight in college, something which made the rocker feel “solid.” Morrison went on to say, “What’s wrong with being fat? That’s what I want to know. Why is it so onerous to be fat? I don’t see anything wrong with fat. You know? I mean, I remember when I used to weigh 185 pounds.”
The interview comes from “Blank on Blank,” a new PBS project that animates lost interviews with journalists and famous icons.
