Here’s a question for you. If you were Queen Elizabeth II, would you dub Ozzy Osbourne a knight? One woman from Sydney, Australia, armed with 425 petition signatures certainly would.
We’re not talking about the knights that guard bridges and wear suits of armor; we’re talking about that elite group of people that includes Paul McCartney, David Bowie, and Elton John. Ozzy’s contributions to rock are invaluable, but having a pedigree for singing about cults and Satan coupled with ground-and-pound thrash metal might not be what the Queen considers orthodox.
The Birmingham Mail reports that Helen Maidotis, the fan spearheading the task at hand, initially started out with the hope of getting all four original Black Sabbath members knighted, before deciding to tackle the Ozzy effort first. She has started an online petition and even launched a Facebook page dedicated to her mission.
“Ozzy has been an inspiration to many great musicians over the last 40 years,” Maidiotis’ writes in her online petition, found here. “He is a credit to his country and I believe a knighthood for Ozzy is one well-deserved and long overdue.”
This is the latest attempt to immortalize the Osbourne name since fans unsuccessfully rallied around efforts to rename Birmingham International Airport in Great Britain to Ozzy Osbourne International Airport last January.
Whether or not Maidotis reaches her goal, we know she’ll feel some solace when Osbourne comes to the land down under in April to kick off the June release of 13, Black Sabbath’s first new album with their infamous frontman since 1978.
