Happy Birthday David Geffen!
By: Catherine Mitchell

Donna Summers
, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin and many others have the voice, but are the products of one man’s eye for talent, David Geffen.

Born Feb. 21, 1943 in Brooklyn, N.Y., Geffen was introduced to entrepreneurship at “his mother’s knee.” Finding a love for the entertainment industry from Hollywood Rajah, he studied drama and music in high school. Deciding that the traditional college route was not for him (he flunked out of the University of Texas at Austin), Geffen eventually obtained a job at CBS-TV studios.

Later, after getting a job at the William Morris Talent Agency, Geffen became known for his sociability. He rapidly moved up the business ladder, and within 18 months, was a junior talent agent. Signing big name music artists, he soon made his first million by 1969.

Geffen has cofounded Asylum Records (1970) and Dreamworks (1994). He even has his own record and film company in 1980, appropriately named Geffen Records. The most notable talents on his record label include Guns N’ Roses, Cher and Neil Young. He also founded DCG after he sold Geffen Records, and the first group to sign with the new company was Nirvana. DCG was also behind the hit movies Interview with the Vampire (1994) and Beavis and Butthead Do America (1996).

With many other accomplishes under his belt, there just isn’t enough time or space to talk about them all. With much admiration for a self-made man, many birthday wishes on this special day!
