Allman Brothers Band Releases New Live Recordings
By: Ray Hidalgo
1/24/2013

Starting Feb. 12, fans of the Allman Brothers Band will be able to relive some of the greatest shows ever hosted by one of rock’s most influential ensembles.

Over the years, the members of the Allman Brothers Band kept personal recordings of their shows, but never released them to the public. It plans to bring fans back to the period of transition that followed the deaths of core members Berry Oakley and Duane Allman.

The first album features the emotional first show at the City Auditorium in the band’s hometown of Macon, GA since Duane Allman’s tragic passing. The show went on with the remaining band members still taking the stage; keyboardist Gregg Allman; drummers Butch Trucks and Jaimoe Johnson; bassist Berry Oakley; and guitarist Dickey Betts. Over two discs, the Feb. 11, 1972 performance kicks off with ‘Statesboro Blues’ and finishes with ‘Whipping Post’, and features 12 songs total.

The second album moves ahead to May 5, 1973, in Uniondale, NY at the Nassau Coliseum. Berry Oakley’s untimely death was yet another blow to the group which was still reeling from the loss of Allman, but in that time, they had still managed to release the successful Eat a Peach. Keyboardist Chuck Leavell entered the fold while Lamar Williams would fill in for the late Oakley at bass. Four hit songs including ‘Ramblin’ Man’ and ‘Jessica’ are included in the 15-song set; this will be the first live or archival recordings of those particular songs ever released.

With the untimely deaths of key members, the wildly-successful Allman Brothers Band began to slowly unravel. While the dynamic between a group of musicians who were known to jam on a whim for over a half-hour would never be the same, it is still standing. Gregg Allman once told SoundSpike, “I play every show like it's my last. Fortunately that's never turned out to be the case."
