"SGT. PEPPER'S" COLLAGE UP FOR AUCTION

10/8/2012

The original Peter Blake collage from the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" is going on the auction block next month. Sotheby's in London will include the piece in an auction of Blake's work on November 13; it's expected to fetch between $80,000 and $130,000. The collage -- which should not be confused with the album cover -- features cut-out images of the fictional Sgt. Pepper along with his moustache, shoulder stripes, a couple of medallions and a photo of the Beatles in their military-style uniforms. "If you want to cut out those shapes you could almost become Sgt Pepper yourself, with the cutout mustache and the stripes and the badges," Sotheby's James Rawlin explains. Blake gave the collage to Mary Jane Long as a gift in 1968
