Bon Jovi fans were surprised and saddened to learn that guitarist Richie Sambora will be sitting out the next leg of the group's Because We Can Tour due to unspecified "personal issues," according to the band's official website.
The tour is underway in Canada with a show tonight (April 3) in Edmonton, wrapping up in North America on April 25 before heading overseas to South Africa and Europe during May, June and early July.
Sambora missed 13 dates on the 2011 Bon Jovi Live tour in order to enter rehab for substance abuse, but it's not known if similar issues are taking him off the Because We Can Tour. Earlier this year the 53-year-old Sambora told us that he can always depend on the support of his bandmates and the rest of the Bon Jovi touring entourage:
"I'm a guy who's fallen down in the public eye and got back up and fallen down again and got back up again...Between my friends and my band and my family...it's a process of giving and receiving...My dad was one of nine kids, and you could imagine all the kids have kids and now they have kids. The amazing microcosm of life in the myriad of stuff that just happens, there's always something going on. Our family has endured ever difficulty there possibly can be. You're talking about 100 people in the circle. You have to put a system in place, and that's what I've done."
Bon Jovi returns to the U.S. on July 12 for a short run of stadium shows in Chicago, Detroit, Boston and East Rutherford, N.J. The group's new "What About Now" album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart in March.
