Aerosmith’s “Let Rock Rule” tour was running without a hitch, until about two weeks ago, when the band had to cancel their show in Concord, Calif. after drummer Joey Kramer had to undergo a “minor medical procedure.”
While no one has commented on the extent of the procedure (except for Joey’s wife, Linda, who tweeted it was “related to his heart”), bassist Tom Hamilton recently spoke with WDHA’s Terrie Carr and explained what happened and talked about Joey’s son, Jesse, filling in for his dad:
“Joey’s doing great. He found out indirectly from some scan he was getting as part of a check-up that he had a plugged up artery in his heart. Not one of the major ones, but enough of one to be a problem. So, he had that cleaned out, and in the meantime, his son, Jesse, he came in in the last second and did two shows with us and did a fantastic job. He’s really familiar with our material, because he works for Joey as Joey’s drum tech. We rehearsed Jesse two years ago, when Joey had another problem with his shoulder, and we thought we’d not be able to have him play. Jesse stepped right in there; he was a little rusty, and there were some pretty funny moments during the show. But it all went through, and he basically saved our ass.”
Health issues aside, this recent Aerosmith tour has definitely been one of their best in recent history, and it’s something that Tom has noticed on a nightly basis:
“This probably sounds like salesmanship, but, you know, the way it’s been lately has definitely been on a scale higher than we’ve ever played on stage. I mean, we just feel so good about the set list we’re doing and the way the band’s been playing. We’ve been on the road since May; we did a six-week tour in Europe, and now, we’ve been in North America since then. Everybody is just really digging into their instruments to just get more out than we’ve gotten before. It’s just feels great out there, and the audiences have been really incredible. We’re feeling great.”
It’s hard to believe how fast this tour (and summer) has flown by. With only five stops left, Aerosmith will wrap up their “Let Rock Rule” tour on September 12th in Nova Scotia. For all the latest on America’s Greatest Rock and Roll Band, go to Aerosmith.com.
