“Like A Rolling Stone” Lyric Sheets Sell For $2M At Auction

NEW YORK, NY - JUNE 20: The most popular manuscript ever to apper at auction, Bob Dylan's original hand written lyrics for the 1965 epic 'Like A Rolling Stones', shown at the press preview 'A Rock & Roll History: Presley To Punk' at Sotheby's on June 20, 2014 in New York City.
Sotheby's
auction house is claiming a new world's record after a hand-written early draft of Bob Dylan's 1965 classic "Like a Rolling Stone" sold for $2.045 million.

The winning bidder has not been identified, nor has the seller, who claimed he was given the lyric sheet by Dylan himself. The draft includes some different lyrics, including several phrases and a reference to Al Capone that Dylan rejected in the final recording, while the song's chorus does not appear until the fourth page of the manuscript.

Another Dylan lyric sheet, for 1963's "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall," fetched $485,000 during the same auction.

"Like a Rolling Stone" was released on July 20, 1965 and has been covered over the years by the Rolling Stones, the Rascals, John Mellencamp and many others.
