Alice Cooper Covers Album To Feature Original Songs

LOS ANGELES, CA - APRIL 23: Musician Alice Cooper attends the 6th Annual Revolver Golden Gods Award Show at Club Nokia on April 23, 2014 in Los Angeles, California.
Though it was initially planned as a covers album, Alice Cooper says his tribute to the "Hollywood vampires" will include new material, too.

The set, which Cooper tells us is "99 percent done," pays tribute to his running buddies from the early 70s in Los Angeles, including John Lennon, Harry Nilsson and Elton John; he's also cut versions of songs by the Doors, Jimi Hendrix and others who were associated with that scene. But Cooper says it made sense to include some original songs as well:

"We over-recorded a lot 'cause we wrote four songs for it, too. Since it is, really, a bit of a conceptual album, we felt that we could write a couple songs to set it up and a couple songs to finish it off, and in the middle is all the songs that are kind of the meat of the whole thing. I think when you see the package and you see how it's done and who's involved in it, you kind of get the idea what the whole thing is."

Cooper is also adding special guest players to the project, though he's not revealing names yet. Cooper is in "no hurry" to put the album out, however; the new documentary "Super Duper Alice Cooper" is just coming out, with theatrical screenings beginning Wednesday (April 30) and the DVD due in June, and he'll be on the road with Motley Crue starting July 2 in Grand Rapids, Mich.
