Happy Birthday, Eric Clapton!

“Clapton is God!” proclaimed a piece of London subway graffiti in 1965. Since then, that phrase has stuck and so has his presence in rock.

From his time with legendary bands including The Yardbirds, Cream and Blind Faith to his big solo break in 1970, Eric Clapton, who celebrates a birthday today, has certainly established himself as one of the greatest guitar gods in music history.

A Blues-worshipper since the beginning, Clapton grew up listening to greats like Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, and his hero, B.B. King.  The blues influenced his music greatly as he went to record no. 1 classics like “Layla,” “I Shot The Sheriff,” and “Lay Down Sally.”

Clapton has had his share of personal tragedy, namely the tragic death of his son Conor in 1991, which inspired the heartbreaking track “Tears From Heaven,” but he has been able to rise above it thanks to music.  He made a huge comeback in 1992 with the release of his edition of MTV Unplugged, selling an astounding 15 million copies and earning him 6 Grammy awards the following year.

Recently, Clapton told Rolling Stone he would stop touring at 70, but he isn’t slowing down just yet! He released his 21st studio album Old Sock last March and has a number of tour dates lined up through June!
