Deep Purple Announces New Single and Limited Edition Version of Latest Album
By: Gary Graff

Deep Purple
is remembering late keyboardist Jon Lord on "Above and Beyond," the third single from its latest album, "NOW What?!"

The song will be released during late October in the U.K. and Europe in several configurations, most containing bonus tracks.

Frontman Ian Gillan tells us that the song, which includes the line "souls having touched are forever entwined," was actually written before Lord's death on July 12, 2012 from cancer but clearly took on greater meaning after his passing:

"That kind of summed up the fact Jon is still in the band and he's still with us in spirit...It was almost like when my dad died. He kind of physically disappeared, but then his spirit just filled the room. He's been traveling with me ever since. I think that just happened with Jon; his spirit just filled the room the whole (recording) session, and I wouldn't say we wrote anything with him in mind...but his spirit was there, very much so."

Deep Purple is also planning to release a limited, expanded edition of "NOW What?!" overseas in early November called "The NOW What?! Live Tapes," featuring a second CD with live recordings from its latest European tour.

The album debuted at No. 1 in four countries and has sold more than 250,000 copies worldwide so far.

Deep Purple next plays October 13 in Glasgow, Scotland, then tours France and Germany with Peter Frampton starting October 26. Guitarist Steve Morse is currently touring North America with Joe Satriani.
