Update on New Paul McCartney Album

They might not have been the original inspiration behind “We Can Work it Out,” but the song’s mantra appears to be rubbing off on four different producers and Sir Paul McCartney as they all collaborate on a new album.

Although the styles and genres that most people would associate with the Beatles legend don’t necessarily align with the array of artists that McCartney’s new partners have worked with, he could not care less.

When he was asked about what kind of music to expect by the BBC (via Something Else Reviews), McCartney said, “It’s Paul McCartney songs. What can I say? Paul McCartney songs are varied. There will be a ballad, there will be a rocker — I don’t know how to classify them. I guess the worst thing for me would be to call them ‘pop songs.’ But it’s probably what they are. I hate those categories.”

Paul McCartney is certainly familiar with Giles Martin, son of the Beatles’ go-to collaborator and longtime producer George Martin. The other producers are a little off the pop rock (sorry, Paul) path. Also joining McCartney at Air Studios in London for recording sessions will be Paul Epworth who has worked with Atlanta rapper Cee Lo Green; Ethan Johns who has backed the popular alternative rockers of Kings of Leon; and Mark Ronson who has produced for Hawaiian R&B standout Bruno Mars.

“They’re really good people,” McCartney told BBC of his new team. “I knew their work, and I knew they were very good, so I just thought: ‘Let me see if I get on with them.’ I thought one might sort of rise to the top. They’re cool people whose work I liked,” McCartney said, before adding with a laugh: “Of course, what’s happened is, I like them all.”

McCartney reports he’s trying to get the album released within the “next month or so,” and having received his 17th Grammy last Sunday for the album Kisses on the Bottom, the 70-year-old rocker isn’t showing any signs of retiring just yet. After all, there are plenty of places across the musical universe that even he has yet to venture to.
