VAN HALEN UPDATE:
Van Halen Storms Charlotte In Home Opener

There's no more guessing and wondering; Van Halen kicked off its reunion tour with original David Lee Roth on Thursday (September 27th) in Charlotte, N.C., playing a two-hour and 10-minute, 24-song show accented by an extensive light and laser show and finishing with a massive confetti shower for the audience.

The concert, which marked the debut of guitarist Eddie Van Halen's 16-year-old son Wolfgang on bass in place of Michael Anthony, started with the group's first single, a cover of the Kinks' "You Really Got Me," and mixed hits ("Jump," "Panama," "Hot For Teacher," "Beautiful Girls," "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love") with album tracks such as "I'm the One," "Romeo Delight," "Mean Street" and "Little Dreamer." Eddie's guitar solo incorporated "Women in Love," "Cathedral" and "Eruption," while his brother Alex Van Halen performed his customary drum solo. The tour hits Detroit's Joe Louis Arena on October 20th and the Palace of Auburn Hills on October 22nd. The full Van Halen opening night set list included: "You Really Got Me," "I'm the One," "Runnin' With the Devil," "Romeo Delight," "Somebody Get Me a Doctor," "Beautiful Girls," "Dance the Night Away," "Atomic Punk," "Everybody Wants Some," "So This Is Love?," "Mean Street," "Pretty Woman," Drum Solo, "Unchained," "I'll Wait," "And the Cradle Will Rock," "Hot for Teacher," "Little Dreamer," "Little Guitars," "Jamie's Cryin'," "Ice Cream Man," "Panama," Guitar Solo ("Women in Love," "Cathedral", "Eruption"), "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love," (encore) "1984," "Jump"

PHOTOS OF TOUR: The web site www.jfindley.smugmug.com has a number of photos as well as a report from a fan who attended a September 8th run through of the show.

STAGE DETAILS: Van Halen is using an S-shaped runway that juts into the main floor as well as a video screen that stretches the length of the stage behind the band.

SET LIST: The set list is drawn entirely from front man David Lee Roth's tenure with the group, with nothing from the Sammy Hagar or Gary Cherone albums.

Van Halen held a final rehearsal on September 16th that was attended by about 500 fans and friends, including members of Metallica, Rage Against the Machine and Puddle of Mudd. At one point Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Zakk Wylde tried to climb onstage but was rebuffed by Roth, who told him, "Nah, nah, nah. Are you in show biz? Then get off the stage. Get off the f***ing stage."
