There was an excerpt in RS 2 weeks ago and natually they went for the salacious stuff surrounding his stint with Van Halen. He was on with Jay Leno Wed. night and apparantley there's some other stuff in there worth reading. He said to Jay, "Hey, If I can go from rags to riches, anyone can. I'm not the smartest guy, I'm not the most talented guy, but nobody OUTWORKS me" The American dream in a nutshell.

UN-PLANTED

Robert Plant did an interview lately and unless he changes his world view, you can really plant Led Zeppelin for good. Two things stood out. First he feels light years from the guy that 30-40 years ago, was thee rock god 24/7. He also doesn't want to be trapped in a dog and pony nostalgia show that never reaches the soaring heights of yesteryear. Just listen to that first Zeppelin album. Half of the vocals are either looong majestic screams, or breathing hard. To have to muster that night after night, over Jimmy Page's thundering guitar, is truly a young man's task.
Second, and more scary for Zepp fans is Plant's new found direction with his new unit, Band of Joy. He's developed a huge appreciation for American Appalacian music. Apparently a lot of those folk ballads of the Britsh Isles died over there, but livied on ...

TURN The JIMMY PAGE

Jan. 9th it's Happy Birthday to rock legend Jimmy Page. The Guitarist and leader of Led Zeppelin, first debuted at age 14 in a skffle band on a talent show called "All Your Own", in 1958! He played as a studio "cat" on many other peoples' songs during the British Invasion. Songs by Donovan, The Kinks, Tom Jones (yep), to name a few. He was asked to play in the Yardbirds after Clapton left, but decided he didn't want to go on the road. He was still living at his mother's house and going to work in the recording studio almost like a regular job. He saved $$$$. He eventually joined the Yardbirds at the very end, but was ready to form HIS own band. He then asked John Paul Jones to be bassist while working with him on Donovan's "Hurdy Gurdy Man". ...

IT'S ALIVE, IT'S ALIVE, Pt. Deux

Once again friends, defying science and to the delight on his fans, Keith Richards celebrates another B-Day today, Dec. 18th. Last year he got his kicks, with # 66 so add one for this one. In the event of nuclear exchange in Korea, scientists have concluded that because of Korea's small size, the only survivors will be insects and Keith Richards....for more on Keith, scroll down to my Keith blog from last year's b-day. I think it's on page 8.

It"sAbout Time

Looks like Detroit's own ALICE COOPER will be inducted into the ROCK & ROLL Hall of FAME with this years "class". Alice has long been a favorite here in Detroit first, then world wide. The thing that Alice brought to rock was the theatrical performance. At first groups usually just stood there and played. In fact the bands from Liverpool, like the Beatles, also had a nasty habit of wearing their guitars too high which made it worse. Just look at some of the other bands from the north of England like Gerry and the Pacemakers and you'll see what I mean. Then you had bands like the Rolling Stones that offered a little swing and movement onstage. This was due in no small part, to The Stones going on tour with Ike & Tina Turner and other soul acts that always had that going on. Hendrix then blew ...

Detroit Rock City

There's big fun to be had downtown this Thanksgiving Weekend. First Tom Brady and the NE Pats come in for the NFL game Thursday. Then the action moves over to the Fillmore for 2 nights of Classic Detroit rock. On Friday, it's Alto Reed and friends, including Mitch Ryder. Sat, it's the return of the ROCKETS, rockin out for the first time since opening for J. GEILS in Aug. Lead singer Jim Edwards has filled Gilbert's void nicely and Jim McCarty's guitar playing is actually better than the Rockets heyday. I listened to a ROCKETS song recorded at the Royal Oak in the 80's right next to the same song recorded last year and this checks out. Tix are only 10 bucks, check it out.

Really ROR!

What gas at the finale for this year's Rockin on the RiverFront. I got to open with the Eddie Leighton Project and we brought ringers. Steve Kostan w/the Eddie
Leighton Project...kiddin, but think aboutit. J'Geils, The ROCKETS, The Romantics<AEROSMITH< Sammy Hagar, TED NUGENT, and course KISS. It was a great flashback to a great era that fuels WCSX. All these bands always rocked LIVE and that's where the men are separated from the rest. NownI have to face stupid reality again...- SK

BLINDSIDED!

I was pleasantly blindsided by how great The GREG ROLLIE Band was at Rockin on the RiverFront. He's an original member of both Santana and Journey and it was definitely early Santana time. He concentrated on the stuff he was originally on and he kept true to the original arrangements which made it big fun. His guitarist had the Carlos phasing down to a tee and he had a great, and relentless, rhythm section. He really got the crowd going, and kept em going. It was like Woodstock..without the mud.

Our Workforce Lunchtime concerts at Campus Martius are going well. They start at 11:30 and run until 1:00pm. Rockin on the RiverFront has BOC and Solid State this Friday July 27th and Greg Rollie and Salem Witchcraft, there's a classic name from yesteryear, next week. Save Friday the 13th of Aug for our big final Riverfront show. Bring your earplugs because, I'll be joining the Eddie Leighton Project, opening for the motorcity's own Romantics. Wally Palmer, the Romo's lead singer was in Windsor last Friday as part of Ringo's All-Star Band. It must have been cool to have Ringo playin drums on "What I Like About You". I really liked it when Ringo said hi from onstage to "Wally's Mum" , who was in the crowd. How cool for both Wally and "mum." Make this Friday ...
