Brian Woehlke was just 10 months into his dream job as a Wayne-Westland firefighter when he was killed after a roof collapsed on him during a strip mall fire. Brian was the first firefighter killed in the line of duty in the Westland department's 47 year history.
Brian left behind his wife Jennifer and a 13-month old daughter Ava. How can you help? A trust fund has been established to help Woehlke's 13-month-old daughter. If you would like to contribute, you can make a check out to the Westland Firefighters Charity and send it to PO Box 851320, Westland, Michigan 48185. Checks can also be dropped off to Station 1 at the corner of Ford Road and Central City in Westland and you can donate by clicking here
So as you look at the firefighter with his rake, hose or axe,
His beet red face or ice covered mustache,
You should know why he goes through that smoky front door,
And is forced to crawl like a baby down on the floor.
He does it to save both lives and property,
All that is precious to you and to me.
So take a good look at this modern warrior who serves his call proud and true,
And know that he would die just to save me and you.
